WE ARE RACIIT

Introducing WEVOLVE 2020, A social initiative taken up by the Rotaract club of IIT. A step taken, to help educate people, to basically encourage increased efforts to spread awareness. This was conducted throughout a month in four virtual sessions providing the audience a portal to post their questions and experiences anonymously, discussing, “Suicidal Thoughts”, “Bullying”, “Mental and Physical Health”, “Child Abuse” Which as we believe, are crucial and timely topics that are highly influential in shaping individual behavior.

Suicidal thoughts Being a problem so big can’t it be tackled up? As the question arises, our first speaker, Thilini Madawanarachchi the founder, chief executive officer at Success Life Maps (pvt) Ltd. Holding a PhD in Biotechnology shared her thoughts about this matter, who happens to be a thorough believer that ending one’s life is not the solution. She emphasised on the fact that we should do our part and spread awareness on such a level that everyone out there is able to identify and pay attention to those who have suicidal tendencies, without dismissing them as a passing phase.

Counsellor and psychotherapist at the Sri Lankan National Institute of professional counsellors, a psychology lecturer and a special need teacher, Rashmi Sooriyabandara our second speaker who spoke on the topic “Bullying” stated that bullying culture can develop in any context in which humans interact with each other such that anti-bullying concept has become a necessity. Thus the society needs to adopt policies to address the existence of bullying.

A massive personality who is a Certified Transformational Coach and Management Consultant, who has carried out training programs in many countries, Fahad Farook also had valuable ideas to share with us on the topic “Mental and physical health” as, without both these components, one cannot thrive or reach their full potential. He also pointed out that the only way to shatter the stigma is to increase awareness which will eventually result in people coming out seeking help earlier on.

On the last session held; Kumudini Perera-David, an amazing individual, spoke about the consequences of “child abuse”, which can result in intergenerational impact in a child’s life. She also discussed what could be done for the maltreatments a child goes through.

We are very grateful that we got the opportunity to discuss these taboo topics in an open arena with Thilini Madawanarachchi, Rashmi Sooriyabandara, Fahad Farook and Kumudini Perera-David, joining in hands with us.
